Have you ever known someone who did Godly things for the wrong reason, or someone whose intentions to do God’s will were good, but their efforts ended up causing more harm than good?

I’ve been that person and I know a few, too.

“Joan” spent Sunday afternoons visiting people in the nursing home and those who were homebound. That definitely falls under the category of “God’s work.” But because “Joan” spent the rest of the week telling me and several others all the things the families of these elderly people were doing (or not doing) wrong, the term ‘God’s work” didn’t seem to fit.

“John” has been known to mow lawns for people while they were in the hospital, arrange for a mechanic to work on a widow’s car, and post prayer needs on behalf of others on his social media… all without being asked. “John’s” intentions and motives are as genuine as they come, but on more than a few occasions, he has overstepped; sometimes causing hard feelings because of it.

Remember, doing God’s work isn’t about doing good works so that you’ll be like God. Doing God’s work is about being like God so you will be motivated to do good works.
