Dysfunction to Deliverance

by Beatrice Jean-Baptiste

Mark 9:21-24

He asked his father, “How long has it been since this has come to him?” He said, “From childhood. Often it has cast him both into the fire and into the water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us, and help us.” Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out with tears, “I believe. Help my unbelief!”

In Mark 9, a father is fed up.

He is tired of living in dysfunction. His son has been tormented by an evil spirit for much too long and although it began when he was a child, the father has come to a turning point. He wants his son to be delivered. He no longer wants to accept dysfunction as a normal part of their life.

In desperation, he brings his son to Jesus. The father pleads with Jesus to extend help and compassion.

Lovingly, Jesus enquires about his faith.

Withholding nothing, the father admits that he believes Jesus is able to heal his son but he still has some doubts. He cries out, “I believe, help my unbelief!”

And just like that, in His mercy, Jesus sets his son free from the demonic stronghold that caused this suffering family to live in dysfunction.

God sees you and He knows the struggles you’re facing right now. He is aware of the dysfunction you have had to accept as “normal.” But in the midst of your pain, your faith can set you free, even if there’s some doubt lurking behind.

Today, cry out to God like the hurting father in Mark 9 and experience God’s deliverance. He longs to help you and extend compassion to you.

Reflection

Is there something in my life that I have accepted as “normal” but need the faith to be delivered from and set free? I will pray the prayer of the desperate father in Mark 9 and ask God for greater faith.

Prayer

Dear God, I believe in Your power to deliver me and grant me wholeness and healing at this very moment. Lord, I believe, help my unbelief. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
