The Life-Giver and the Light-Bearer

by Pastor Ken

John 1:1-4

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him. Without him, nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

Today’s verse expresses the truth about Jesus with two basic words: life and light.

Jesus is the Life-Giver.

John says, “In Him was life.” John uses the word “life” 36 times in his gospel. Jesus says that He is both the giver of life and the author of life (John 11:25; John 14:6; John 10:10).

The term “life” refers to eternal life — a life not limited by time, nor hindered by death. The gift of this eternal life is ours from God through Jesus.

Jesus is the Light-Bearer.

John says, “the life was the light of men.” John uses the word “light” 21 times in his gospel. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12; John 9:5).

John depicts Jesus the Light as a name for the long-awaited Messiah. It means that Jesus is God in the flesh.

Jesus as the Life-Giver gives you something you could never get on your own — eternal life (John 3:16). Earthly death cannot take this gift from us.

Jesus also gives you something more than you deserve. He gives you abundant life which is filled with unmerited grace and blessings (John 10:10).

Today is yours — a day given to you by God to enjoy the hope of eternal life, abundantly illuminated by Jesus Himself.

Reflection

What changes must I make to put my full trust in Jesus the Life-Giver and to follow Him as my Light-Bearer?

Prayer

Holy God, Please help me place my whole faith and trust in the Life-Giver. I want to follow the Light-Bearer, Jesus, wherever He may lead. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
