What Is Your Reward?

by Heather Tietz and Joyverse

Colossians 3:23-24

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.

All our work on earth births something.

Our everyday labor results in some sort of product. With your hands and your mind you create art, or clean up trash, or teach the next generation, or sling computer code, or deliver mail, or fabricate widgets. At the same time, your interactions with others birth intangible goods — justice, perhaps; safety, cleanliness, health, wisdom, education, peace.

How does your muscle power, your brain power benefit society? How does it raise up righteousness? How does it please God?

Our labor every day is not just a means to pay bills; it’s a service to others. It’s a service to God, caring for the world in whatever way our job is scripted. Because of that, God is ultimately our boss. We are using the skills He has built into our lives to serve Him.

We are always under the watch of the Almighty God in charge. When no one else notices our timeliness, our attention to detail, the extra effort we give, the grace we extend, God does. He sees what results our work produces. His pleasure is the ultimate reward.

Strive for Him to say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Reflection

What intangible good does my labor produce?

Prayer

Dear Savior, May all my labor be for You. Help me to realize that no matter how menial the task, I can do it to Your glory. Help me to serve You faithfully in all I do. Amen.
