Jacob awakened out of his sleep, and he said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I didn’t know it.” He was afraid, and said, “How awesome this place is! This is none other than God’s house, and this is the gate of heaven.”
Where does God live?
Jacob awakened from a dream where he witnessed the presence of God in the place where he slept.
God spoke to him, renewing the covenant He made with Jacob’s father and grandfather, that He would be their God and they would be His people.
Jacob then dedicated himself to live under God’s covenant.
He recognized that when God is present, the place and the people become changed. They become holy. That’s why Jacob said, “How awesome this place is! This is none other than God’s house, and this is the gate of heaven” (Genesis 28:17).
Jacob knew that God lived anywhere and everywhere. The great God of the universe cannot be contained in a church building. He is not absent in an endless heaven. No. God lives in each one of His children. He fills the air we breathe. He surrounds us and saturates us with His presence.
Jacob rose up in the morning, set up the stone he had used as a pillow, and called the place Bethel, a Hebrew word that means God’s house (Genesis 28:18-19).
Where does God live? He lives in His children’s heart.
I pray that He lives in yours and in mine forever.
What are some ways I can recognize God’s presence in a place I did not expect to find it?
Dear God, Please fill my heart. Saturate my spirit. I pray that You follow me wherever I go, so people will recognize Your presence and will say “surely the Lord is in this place!” Thank You for Your love and blessings. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
