But now complete the doing also, that as there was the readiness to be willing, so there may be the completion also out of your ability.
When I was younger, I never really understood why people would tell me to work with a happy heart. In my mind, work was something to get done, not something to enjoy, or to be done cheerfully.
But as I grew older, I began to understand that the best way to serve someone is out of love.
Just imagine: if you asked someone to do something and they did it in anger, grumbling the whole time, you might not be very grateful for what they did. You might even regret asking them in the first place. But on the other hand, if you asked someone to do something for you and they did it with a cheerful attitude, without complaining, you would be very happy and grateful for their hard work.
When someone does something cheerfully, their attitude adds to what they did, perhaps making it mean even more than if they had just completed the task. But when someone does something with a bad attitude, it almost ruins what they did in the first place.
The next time someone asks you to do something, try doing it cheerfully. It might make the work easier for both of you!
How cheerfully do I do my work? What are some ways that I could serve others today with a happy heart?
Dear Lord, Thank You for Your loving kindness toward me. Please come live in my heart. May I always be ready and willing, eager to tell others what You have done for me. Please help me to serve You and others cheerfully. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
