Get Up and Grow

by Beatrice Jean-Baptiste

Job 32:7-9

I said, ‘Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.’ But there is a spirit in man, and the Spirit of the Almighty gives them understanding. It is not the great who are wise, nor the aged who understand justice.

Did you know that as we age our brains retain their ability to grow?

For so long, we lived as if aging were a death sentence to growth. People loved saying, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” But that statement is barking up the wrong tree.

In fact, that outdated information has been replaced with the new science of neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity lets us know that the brain is plastic-like and can change over the course of one’s life. It turns out that an old dog can learn new tricks.

Eighty-four-year-old Ernestine Shepherd is the world’s oldest female body builder. She did not begin a consistent exercise routine until the age of 56!

Shepherd learned something new and it changed her life.

Sometimes, we think that as we age, we should have all the answers. But the truth of the matter is that no one does except God.

Every day, God grants us an opportunity to learn something new; to stretch and grow. Admitting that we don’t know it all is an invitation to live an expansive life. God has given us life and He gives us opportunities to grow, even in our senior years.

Reflection

What is something new that I would like to learn about? What steps can I take today to embark on this new journey of discovery?

Prayer

Dear God, Thank You for having all the answers to every perplexing problem I might encounter. Thank You for a lifetime of learning. Please continue to bless my quest for wisdom and understanding. May I grow ever closer to You all the days of my life. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
