Low Expectations

by Darla Noble

John 16:23-24

In that day you will ask me no questions. Most certainly I tell you, whatever you may ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now, you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be made full.

A few years ago, Susan Boyle became an overnight sensation when she appeared on Britain Has Talent — a televised talent contest.

Boyle’s beautiful singing voice caused people to sit up and take notice. But that wasn’t what they noticed first.

The first thing people noticed when she stepped out on the stage was that she was what some might describe as “plain.” Because that’s what they saw, they decided that’s who Susan Boyle was. Until she started singing, that is.

When she sang, people were amazed and wanted to hear more. And more… and more.

In a way, we are a lot like the people in that audience when it comes to our prayer life.

As immature Christians, we paint a picture and perception of God in our minds that limits His desires and capabilities. But when He steps out from those things and shows us what He is willing and capable of doing, we are filled with joy.

That joy causes us to ask for more. We want more of Jesus because we are confident that what He gives is so amazingly good.

If you aren’t enjoying Jesus at His best, it’s because you aren’t confident enough in who Jesus is, to ask for His best in your life.

Reflection

How can my prayers become more focused on what God wants for me, not what I want for me?

Prayer

Dear Jesus, Please forgive me for my low expectations. Forgive my weak, limiting faith. Please hear my prayers. I want to experience the joy of knowing and serving You. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
