The night wrapped itself around my mom and me as we lugged our groceries up to our apartment.

A sidewalk connected the parking lot to our apartment building. As we walked down it, we heard a hissing sound in the grass by our feet. We were confused, but didn’t stop to see what it was as we heaved our groceries up the stairs and into the house.

We told my dad about it and he concluded that it must have been the sprinklers, although why the sprinklers would be on at 8:00 pm was anyone’s guess.

I didn’t think much about it until the next day. My dad picked me up from school and as we walked down that same sidewalk, he stopped and pointed to something lying dead in the grass. As we got closer, the bright blue head of a snake flashed in the midday sun!

We were so thankful that God had kept us from being bitten the night before!

Fear is a lot like a snake in the grass. It lurks in the unknown, waiting to bite you.

Today’s verse reminds us that we don’t have to be afraid. Jesus “will keep your foot from being taken.” We can have confidence He will keep His promise.
