You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavor, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men. You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can’t be hidden.
I am a baker. I absolutely love to be in the kitchen creating things, especially sweet things!
Over the years, as I’ve spent hours in the kitchen, I’ve learned a few things about cooking and baking. Salt is one of those things I have made errors on numerous times.
I halved a cookie recipe, but forgot to half the amount of salt, so we ended up with salted chocolate chip cookies. Similar to sea salt caramel cookies, right? Not so much. The extra salt was overwhelming!
Another time, I completely left the salt out of my chocolate chip cookie recipe which, to my surprise, was also not so good!
Salt is one of those spices that needs to be balanced. The right amount brings out the flavor of other things and adds just the right touch. However, too little or too much and suddenly the dish is not so tasty.
In Matthew 5:13-14, we are told that we are the salt and the light of the earth. Both salt and light are things that are necessary and are needed in balance. When we as Christians withdraw from the world and keep to ourselves, we have lost the ability to be salt and light, helping bring out good in society. However, through Christ, we can be the salt of the earth that brings about good.
How can I be the salt of my community? How can I be the light? How can I tell if my “salt” and “light” is either too much or not enough?
Dear God, Please help me to be the right amount of salt and light to those around me, through You. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
