Comfort Amid Suffering

by Erica Cosgrove

2 Corinthians 1:5, 7

For as the sufferings of Christ abound to us, even so our comfort also abounds through Christ. Our hope for you is steadfast, knowing that, since you are partakers of the sufferings, so also are you of the comfort.

Brokenness runs rampant on this earth.

Broken bodies, broken relationships, broken lives. This brokenness causes a great deal of suffering and it can be easy to get weighed down by it all.

Some times all I can see in the world is the immense suffering that continues day after day. I see it in the families that don’t have enough food. I see it in people whose bodies are pain-ridden. I see it in the families broken apart by varying circumstances. I wish that I could fix the brokenness, but I can’t.

However, I do know One who can fix every broken thing and who offers the best comfort.

In 2 Corinthians 1:5 and 7, Paul tells us that Christ’s suffering is our suffering. But though we partake of our Lord’s suffering, we also partake of His comfort.

When I see people who are suffering, I can offer them the comfort I have received in Christ. When I myself am suffering, I can receive comfort from Christ.

You are not left to suffer alone. Christ knows what suffering is. He Himself received comfort from the Father while on earth. Just as God comforted His Son, Jesus, He will comfort us, too.

Reflection

What does it mean to me that Christ has experienced suffering as I have and can offer me comfort?

Prayer

Dear God, I ask to be aware of Your comfort in my sufferings. Please restore my brokenness and make me whole. May I focus on You instead of my suffering and partake in the comfort You offer. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
