Blessings in the Present

by Erica Cosgrove

Ecclesiastes 7:10

Don’t say, “Why were the former days better than these?” For you do not ask wisely about this.

“The good ol’ days.”

We hear and speak this phrase so often that we hardly give thought to it anymore. We reminisce about times gone by that were important and meaningful to us. Remembering is a good thing and often brings us together in connection. However, we should also be careful when thinking on the past.

If we spend all of our time in the past, thinking that the days of our younger selves were so much better, than we will miss all of our present. We often have a problem trying to live in the present. We can get so focused on times past, or times to come, that we miss the blessings of the time we are currently in.

Ecclesiastes 7:10 warns us that it isn’t wise to continually think on our younger days and consider them as better than the stage of life we are currently in. There is much to appreciate about the journey of life and each stage of it. As Ecclesiastes 3 says, there is a time for everything.

Our younger days had their time and there is much good in remembering those times. However, as we age and enter new seasons, we would be wise to find the good in each new day.

Reflection

What blessings do I have in my current stage in life? How have I thanked God for them today?

Prayer

Dear God, Thank You for the blessings You give me each day. Help me to live in the present moment and appreciate each new season You give me — at any age. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
