Cast Your Worries on God

by Erica Cosgrove

1 Peter 5:6-7

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time; casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

I sat there, chest tense, heart beating fast, my stomach twisting itself in knots.

Across from me, looking far more comfortable than I, sat a potential employer. I am an over-thinker who imagines the worst outcomes for situations that are not likely to go as badly as I think.

I worry about things I know that I shouldn’t; things that feel like legitimate worries. Often, my body clues me in to my worry before my conscious mind has figured out what it is that I am worried about.

Though I worry far too much, it is a unique opportunity for me to just as often turn to God.

Peter advises us to cast all of our worries on God because He cares for us.

God can handle all of our worries. He wants us to hand them over to Him. This verse tells us to humble ourselves to God as we cast all our cares His way.

Showing my weakness, my worries, is a humbling thing. Pride says that I can do it all on my own. Humility says that I am worried, and I need God to handle that which worries me.

So, humble yourself today and let God handle your worries.

Reflection

What worries do I need to give to God? How might my pride be standing in the way of doing so?

Prayer

Dear God, Thank You for caring for me so much that You want me to cast my worries on You. Teach me to humble myself and continually rely on You and Your ability to handle my worries. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
