Anyone who has ever seen a giraffe, a cavorting lamb, a playful kitten, or a leaping dolphin knows that God must have a rich sense of humor. He called Moses, a stuttering murderer, to speak to a king and save a nation. He sent a fish to ingest Jonah, the runaway prophet. He used a small shepherd boy to fell a giant.
“A cheerful heart makes good medicine,” wise King Solomon observed (Proverbs 17:22). Why shouldn’t we laugh? Our loving God, who makes all things work together for good (Romans 8:28), never lets us out of His sight!
Every life includes moments of joy and laughter
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.
Jesus promises that my sorrow will be turned to laughter
Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
God’s blessings make me joyful, even when I cannot explain them
Abraham was one hundred years old when his son, Isaac, was born to him. Sarah said, “God has made me laugh. Everyone who hears will laugh with me.” She said, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? For I have borne him a son in his old age.”
The Gospel of Jesus is a glad and joyous message
And how will they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Good News of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!”
God laughs at those who plot against Him
The kings of the earth take a stand, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his Anointed, saying, “Let’s break their bonds apart, and cast their cords from us.” He who sits in the heavens will laugh. The Lord will have them in derision.
God’s blessings are for my benefit
Yet he didn’t leave himself without witness, in that he did good and gave you rains from the sky and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.
God smiles on His children
I smiled on them when they had no confidence. They didn’t reject the light of my face.
I must choose my entertainment wisely
There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. Even in laughter the heart may be sorrowful, and mirth may end in heaviness.
Glad fellowship and good food are hallmarks of God’s community
Day by day, continuing steadfastly with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread at home, they took their food with gladness and singleness of heart.
Understanding God’s Word is cause for joyous celebration
All the people went their way to eat, to drink, to send portions, and to celebrate, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.
God’s salvation is cause for celebration
But it was appropriate to celebrate and be glad, for this, your brother, was dead, and is alive again. He was lost, and is found.
God has plans to bless His children and make them happy
I will build you again, and you will be built, O virgin of Israel. You will again be adorned with your tambourines, and will go out in the dances of those who make merry.
God plans for His children to be joyful for eternity
Let’s rejoice and be exceedingly glad, and let’s give the glory to him. For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his wife has made herself ready.
