I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble; but cheer up! I have overcome the world.
Jesus said, “Cheer up! I have turned misery into peace.”
Reading John 16:16-32 gives a clearer understanding of what verse 33 means.
In these verses, Jesus’ death was only a few hours away. What a contrast the crucifixion provided between the world and the disciples. The world rejoiced as the disciples wept. However, three days later the disciples rejoiced for they saw Jesus once again. His promise had come true.
The world’s values are often the opposite of God’s values. This sometimes causes Christians to feel like misfits. Our lives may be difficult now, yet we, too, will one day rejoice. We must keep our eye on the future and God’s promises.
Jesus’ death and resurrection removed the need for people to approach God through priests, giving us all the ability to approach God directly.
Scripture says a new day has dawned; now all believers are priests, talking with God personally and directly (see Hebrews 10:19-23). We can approach God, not because we deserve it, but because Jesus allowed us the ability.
Because our unbelieving world is out of sync with Christ, His gospel, and His people, it knows only misery instead of peace. Our relationship with Christ peacefully comforts us, for Jesus has overcome the world.
Have you found God’s comfort and peace?
Dear God, When I am overwhelmed and in need comforting, I look to You. Thank You for the peace and comfort only Jesus provides. He is stronger than my misery and my fears. In His name I pray and praise, Amen.
