To truly understand freedom in the Biblical context, we have to understand God’s love.

The love God has for us is pure because freedom exists. If we were forced to love God back, it wouldn’t be love at all. The choice that we have whether to reciprocate God’s love or not is what makes it so pure and shows us what true freedom is.

Out of the freedom God had, He chose to extend freedom to humanity as well.

In Galatians 5:13 we are called for this freedom and learn that it relates to another love.

As God’s children, we are called, or meant, for freedom. He created us to be creatures with freedom of will. However, He also desires that we would choose to use this freedom in ways that align with His law of love.

Our call to freedom is really a higher call to wisely use the freedom we have been given for the glory of God. The verse cautions us against using our freedom for selfish gain. Rather, we are encouraged to use it to extend the same blessings and benefits God gave to us. We are called to love and to serve others, rather than selfishly pervert the freedom of God to get ourselves ahead without regard for anyone else.
