What, Who, When, and How

by Darla Noble

Matthew 2:2

“Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him.”

Worship is defined as an expression of reverence and adoration for something or someone.

Let’s dissect this.

What is worship? An expression.

Who is deserving of our worship? To a Christian, the answer should always be God — God the Father, Spirit, and Son. But how? How do we offer these expressions? And where? When?

Anything we do and say can (and should) be worshipful. The way we speak to our spouse and children. The way we act when the customer service rep provides lousy service. The way we drive. The way we do our job. People should see our respect and awe for God in all we do and say. This is worship.

But there is another form of worship — focused worship — focusing our full attention and thoughts on God.

Scripture tells us to worship God with our bodies. With our voices. When we look at His handiwork in nature. In communal worship in church with our brothers and sisters in Christ. In all circumstances, both good and bad.

Do you see the big picture? Worship is as much about who you are on the inside as it is what you do on the outside. It isn’t always about the where, but that it is always about the Who: you and God.

Reflection

When do I feel most worshipful?

Prayer

Dear God, You are wonderful. I am so privileged that the Mighty God, the all-knowing Holy One chooses to have a relationship with me. I love you now and forever. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
