The young man was a proud member of the Red Army. Then his parents and wife became Christians.

Furious, he bellowed that they were ruining his reputation!

When his wife went blind in one eye and was hospitalized, the doctor warned her not to read. But she couldn’t refrain from reading her Bible. When her husband came to visit and found her in the Word, he was angry again.

“Put that down! I already have a Christian wife. I don’t want a completely blind one!”

But she was hungry for God. Finally, he offered to read to her and asked what she wanted to hear.

“The book of Job,” she responded.

As he read day after day, a change came over him. He began to read the Bible at home each evening. God’s Spirit touched him as he knelt by the bed praying and crying. This Communist soldier became a powerful pastor in China!

The grace of God appears in all kinds of circumstances. The blindness of this man’s wife enabled him to encounter his Savior and become a man instructed in righteousness.

Not only does today’s Bible passage give us hope in whatever life hands us, but it also teaches us that grace can use suffering, ours or someone else’s, to instruct us and draw us to a place of salvation. What a great God we serve!
