Psalms of Hope

List by Ami Hendrickson

Songs of hope in God fill the Psalms, which are as relevant now as they were when they were first written. They testify to His loving kindness. They rejoice in His power. They sing His praise.

Hope in God overcomes despair

Psalm 42:8, 11

The LORD will command his loving kindness in the daytime. In the night his song shall be with me: a prayer to the God of my life. Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God.

God watches over those who hope in Him

Psalm 33:18-19

Behold, the LORD’s eye is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his loving kindness, to deliver their soul from death, to keep them alive in famine.

God is my help and shield

Psalm 33:20-22

Our soul has waited for the LORD. He is our help and our shield. For our heart rejoices in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. Let your loving kindness be on us, LORD, since we have hoped in you.

My hope in God pleases Him

Psalm 147:11

The LORD takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his loving kindness.

God is my hope and my refuge

Psalm 71:3-5

Be to me a rock of refuge to which I may always go. Give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress. Rescue me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man. For you are my hope, Lord GOD; my confidence from my youth.

Hope in God is more important than life itself

Psalm 39:4, 6-7

LORD, show me my end, what is the measure of my days. Let me know how frail I am. Surely every man walks like a shadow. Surely they busy themselves in vain. He heaps up, and doesn’t know who shall gather. Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you.

I hope in God's Word

Psalm 119:114, 116

You are my hiding place and my shield. I hope in your word. Uphold me according to your word, that I may live. Let me not be ashamed of my hope.

My hope in God is my source of happiness

Psalm 146:3-5

Don’t put your trust in princes, in a son of man in whom there is no help. His spirit departs, and he returns to the earth. In that very day, his thoughts perish. Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD, his God.
