When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.”
Zacchaeus was the chief tax collector in Jericho—making him a very rich man. Surprisingly, when he heard Jesus was in town, he wanted to see him…to hear what he had to say.
Unfortunately, he was too short to see over the crowd. Zacchaeus wasn’t easily dissuaded, though, so he climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road that Jesus would take—giving him a ‘bird’s eye’ view.
Sure enough, Jesus passed right by him…and stopped. Jesus looked up at Zacchaeus and shouted: “Zacchaeus! Come down here. I’m going to go to your house to eat today.”
Zacchaeus didn’t waste any time getting down from that tree and took Jesus to his home with excitement and joy because not only had he seen Jesus, but he heard and believed what Jesus had to say. Zacchaeus’ life was changed.
He said, “Lord, I will give half my wealth to the poor. If I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”
Jesus said, “Today, salvation has come to this home, for Zacchaeus has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.”
Zacchaeus just wanted to find out a little more about Jesus. He never dreamed Jesus would talk to him that day—much less go to his house. But Jesus knew Zacchaeus longed for more even if Zacchaeus didn’t. Jesus knew Zacchaeus was looking for the salvation that only He [Jesus] can offer.
Jesus is your salvation, too. No matter who you are or what you have done in the past Jesus can save you. Jesus has His eye on you. He’s saying to you: “Today, salvation has come to this home!” Jesus comes to you; bringing great blessings to make you the person He created you to be.
