“I Didn’t Know the Bible Said That!”

by Ami Hendrickson

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

Psalm 119:105

The Bible is God’s Word to His children.

It tells us of God’s unending love for us. It grants us peace. It promises us a future worth living.

Yet so many people who have never read the Bible assume that God’s Word is irrelevant or too difficult for them to understand. They are often amazed to discover how many of its poetic metaphors have become part of our everyday language.

For instance:

  • The apple of my eye (Psalm 17:8)
  • Can a leopard change its spots? (Jeremiah 13:23)
  • A man after my own heart (1 Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22)
  • A two-edged sword (Proverbs 5:4)
  • An eye for an eye; a tooth for a tooth (Originally from the Code of Hammurabi, King of Babylon from 1792-1750 BCE, quoted by Jesus in Matthew 5:38)
  • As old as the hills (Job 15:7)
  • By the skin of my teeth (Job 19:20)
  • Don’t throw your pearls before swine (Matthew 7:6)
  • Eat, drink, and be merry (Ecclesiastes 8:15)
  • A wolf in sheep’s clothing (Matthew 7:15)
  • The writing is on the wall (the condensed version of Daniel 5)

…and many more! Dig deeper into God’s Word every day and discover how much it still resonates.

Holy Father,
Thank You for gifting me with Your Word. Help me hear what you have to say to me.
Please keep me on the “straight and narrow” (Matthew 7:14 KJV) and make me as “white as snow” (Daniel 7:9).
I pray in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
